Shiang-chyi CHEN is a Taiwanese actress of screen and stage. She started learning ballet at young age, later also learned Beijing opera, and started acting since1987. Shiang-chyi CHEN appeared in Edward YANG’s A Confucian Confusion  (1994, Cannes Film Festival ) as a leading actress while she studied in Educational Theatre at NYU in1994. After acquiring her Master Degree from NYU, she started her career as an actress in Taiwan. In 1996, she began to star in multiple films directed by TSAI Ming-Liang’s , including The River  (1997, Berlin Film Festival, Silver Bear ), What Time is it There  ( 2001, Cannes Film Festival ), Goodbye, Dragon Inn ( 2003, Venice International Film Festival, Fipresci Prize ), The Wayward Cloud  ( 2005, Berlin Film Festival, Silver Bear ), I don’t want to sleep alone  ( 2006, Venice International Film Festival ), Stray Dogs ( 2013, Venice International Film Festival, Jury Prize ), The Deserted ( 2017, Venice International Film Festival ) . She has appeared in many films in Taiwan and overseas as leading or supporting roles. Shiang-chyi CHEN won the best leading actress award in 2014 Taiwan Golden Horse Awards with her performance in the film Exit. She was also recognized and nominated with the following performances :
